The railway from Peebles to Innerleithen was opened in 1864, closed in 1962. Much of the trackbed remains, although the bridge over the Tweed just east of Cardrona has been long demolished. The trackbed has recently been given a new life as a cycle path between the two localities. Essential to this project was the construction of a fine new footbridge over the Tweed just north of the site of the original rail bridge. For a view of the bridge under construction, see here. The bridge was open for traffic in June 2013; the official opening by Paul Wheelhouse MSP, Scottish Minister for Environment and Climate Change took place on 20 August 2013.
The path forms a spur of National Cycle Route 1, the Coast and Castles route, which passes through Innerleithen.
