Early in the year 2002, I moved from Lancaster, home of the bridge which inspired this website, to Durham, which also, if on a smaller scale, has its own Millennium Bridge.
The Pennyferry bridge spans the River Wear a short way downstream of Durham City Centre and was opened in April, 2002 by the local MP, Gerry Steinberg. The band played, and old pennies were presented to the first twenty people to cross the bridge, in commemoration of the supposed penny fare paid on the old ferry at the same site.
