Torrs Millennium Walkway, New Mills

Most bridges cross waterways. The Torrs Millennium Walkway at New Mills is different – it goes along the river, keeping to one side! This remarkable structure runs along the River Goyt as it flows through the Torrs gorge, immediately below the town of New Mills.

TheWalkway, which closes a missing link in the Midshires Way, was the brainchild of Derbyshire County Council, in conjunction with New Mills Town Council and High Peak Borough Council and supported by the Millennium Commission.

The Walkway is 150 metres long and is supported on piers rising from the river bed, and secured to the rock face and railway retaining wall above. The Walkway runs about 6 metres above the river and was completed on 22 December, 1999.
